In the US, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 & commemorates the adoption of the flag, which happened by the resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. Following the Civil War, the American flag became a widespread symbol of American patriotism. The first proposal for a day designated as “Flag Day” was in 1861, a mere two months after the Battle of Fort Sumter.
